"Wade in the Water" USHRN Suga Matthews
The US Human Rights Network National Conference 2008 was a sucessful gathering of activist, lawyers, students, organizers, youths and members of the community . This year’s conference covered a variety of different issues affecting the most marginalized communities in the United States, communities which have been the target of oppression and human rights violations perpetuated because of the failure of the US government to comply with international human rights standards.
Participants, speakers, volunteers and staff have all come away with a sense of renewed vision. The struggle for human rights at home is one that must be led by the communities most affected by human rights abuses. The first ever human rights writers symposium garnered national attention and over 25 books were submitted for review. The national Student/Youth Summit attracted youths from all over the Chicago area, the Gulf Coast and other parts of the country. Members, member organizations and new member organizations were able to strengthen their coalitions, develop ways to organize across a wide variety of issues and begin constructing new and exciting ways to challenge US non-compliance and organize the people to action.
