Civil Society meeting with Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent (WGEPAD)Nov 5, 2018
Some of the participants in attendance at the USHRN hosted briefing and listening session with members of WGEPAD 2018
On October 31, the Network hosted a meeting with members of the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent (WGEPAD) including Mr. Michal Balcerzak, Chair of the Working Group, Ms. Dominique Day, and Mr. Ahmed Reid. The meeting was held in collaboration with the Anti-Racial Discrimination Section at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Mr. Balcerzak was in New York to present the Working Group’s reports to the Third Committee of the General Assembly. The WGEPAD members presented details on the WG's annual thematic work undertaken, for example, on a draft United Nations declaration on the promotion and full respect of human rights of people of African descent; country fact-finding visits were undertaken in the last reporting year (Guyana and Spain) and other areas of their work. In addition, the WGEPAD members wanted to engage with Civil Society organization representatives to update each other on human rights issues of common concern especially since the visit of the WGEPAD in 2016. It was noted that to date there has been no official response to the WGEPAD 2016 report on the US visit. The members were interested in receiving information on the situation of people of African descent since their last visit.
