"SAFE Act" Threatens Immigration Reform

This action is no longer active.

On June 18th, the House Judiciary Committee passed the "SAFE Act," introduced by Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC). The SAFE Act solely focuses on immigration enforcement and will increase detentions and deportations and create an environment of rampant racial profiling and unconstitutional detentions. The Act won't even fix the immigration system’s problems.

We STRONGLY oppose H.R. 2278, which would:

* criminalize 11 million immigrants living in the United States;
* force all state and local police to act as immigration agents and use defunding threats to bully local police into enforcing "broken" federal immigration laws;
* destroy public safety in communities across the country by scaring immigrants and Latinos from reporting crime in fear of deportation; and
* authorize local and state law enforcement agencies to practice racial profiling.

If the SAFE Act passes, it would also be disastrous for Congress's bipartisan efforts for just immigration reform.
